Issues
The residents of James Island, Folly Beach, Kiawah, and Seabrook deserve leadership that strengthens our roots by protecting our land, supporting our families, safeguarding our property, and preserving what makes Charleston our home. Learn more about the issues important to me and my plans to make positive changes for Charleston County.
1
Strong Land. Stronger Protection.
Protecting What Protects Us.
The Challenge:
Kiawah, Seabrook, Folly Beach, and James Island are facing increased flooding, rapid development pressure, and environmental strain. Marshlands are disappearing. Stormwater systems are overwhelmed. Growth is moving faster than our natural protections can handle.
If we weaken our land, we weaken our homes, property values, and storm resilience.
Jaxie’s Plan for Stronger Roots:
-
Expand land preservation and conservation easements
-
Prioritize smart, limited growth aligned with infrastructure capacity
-
Protect marshlands and wetlands that serve as natural flood barriers
-
Expand the county compost program to:
-
Reduce landfill waste
-
Improve soil health
-
Increase water retention to reduce runoff and flooding
-
-
Invest in nature-based flood mitigation strategies
Why It Matters:
Strong land means stronger protection for our homes, our property values, and our future.
2
Strong Infrastructure. Stronger Communities.
Growth That Strengthens, Not Strains.
The Challenge:
Traffic congestion, overwhelmed drainage systems, and infrastructure that hasn’t kept pace with development are daily frustrations in Charleston County. Too often, growth happens before roads, drainage, and emergency services are ready.
Weak infrastructure weakens our quality of life.
Jaxie’s Plan for Stronger Foundations:
-
Require infrastructure impact assessments before approving major development
-
Ensure developers contribute fairly to roads, drainage, and emergency services
-
Prioritize drainage improvements in flood-prone areas
-
Push for long-term planning instead of reactive patchwork fixes
-
Support infrastructure funding that protects island access and safety
Why It Matters:
When we build with strength and planning, our community doesn’t buckle under pressure.
3
Strong Finances. Stronger Households.
Responsible Leadership with Your Tax Dollars.
The Challenge:
Rising costs, from insurance to property taxes, are squeezing families and retirees. Residents deserve confidence that their county government is spending wisely and protecting their investment.
Weak oversight leads to higher costs for everyone.
Jaxie’s Plan for Fiscal Strength:
-
Conduct regular reviews of county spending for efficiency
-
Demand transparency in contracts and procurement
-
Oppose wasteful or unnecessary spending
-
Ensure development pays for itself, not taxpayers
-
Advocate for policies that protect homeowners from unnecessary tax pressure
Why It Matters:
Strong fiscal leadership keeps Charleston affordable and protects the people who built this community.
4
Strong Transportation. Stronger Workforce.
Reliable Systems That Keep Charleston Moving.
The Challenge:
CARTA reliability impacts workers, businesses, and traffic congestion. When public transportation fails, it affects our entire economy, from hospitality to healthcare.
A weak system hurts working families and local businesses.
Jaxie’s Plan Strengthen Mobility:
-
Advocate for improved CARTA reliability and performance accountability
-
Support measurable service benchmarks
-
Improve coordination between transit and development planning
-
Work toward transportation solutions that reduce congestion and protect quality of life
Why It Matters:
A strong transportation system supports a strong economy.
5
Strong Relationships. Stronger Representation.
Leadership That Shows Up.
The Challenge:
Too often, residents feel disconnected from decisions that directly impact their neighborhoods. Growth decisions and spending priorities should never surprise the people they affect.
Weak communication erodes trust.
Jaxie’s Commitment to Strong Community:
-
Monthly rotating office hours on Kiawah, Seabrook, Folly, and James Island
-
Transparent town halls before major development votes
-
Clear communication about upcoming county decisions
-
Accessible, responsive constituent service
-
A commitment to listen first, lead second
Why It Matters:
Strong roots begin with strong relationships. And strong relationships build stronger communities.
